Their Endangered Status

Cheetahs are listed as an endangered species due to their dwindling numbers, which is because of a number of reasons:

  • Loss of habitat - due to human encroachment
  • Loss of prey - directly linked to loss of habitat
  • Hunting - there are still people who wish to hunt these beautiful animals
  • Livestock protection - many farmers believe that cheetahs are preying on their livestock, and therefore shoot, trap or poison cheetahs on their land
  • Limited genetic diversity - cheetahs are very inbred as a species, resulting in low sperm counts in males

Are you interested in volunteering at the Dell Cheetah Centre and helping us save the cheetah?

Our volunteer programme is designed to introduce you to the fascinating wildlife African has to offer as well as the incredible cheetah, and to work closely in all aspects of reserve management.
